PoE

PoE (Power over Ethernet) lets a compatible security camera receive power and network data through one Ethernet cable. It can simplify installation, but compatibility and power requirements still need checking.

What is PoE?

PoE means Power over Ethernet. A compatible security camera can receive electrical power and network data through the same Ethernet cable, rather than using a separate power cable.

A product page may show PoE as a power source type or as a yes/no capability flag. That indicates the listed capability, but the exact PoE standard and requirements may remain unspecified.

Why does PoE matter when buying or comparing?

PoE can simplify installation by reducing the number of cables needed between a camera and its network connection. It may also make it easier to connect cameras to a PoE network switch or injector in a centralized location.

When comparing products, PoE helps you determine whether a camera can fit an existing wired network and power setup. It is especially relevant if you want to avoid planning a separate power outlet near each camera.

When does PoE matter, and when does it not?

PoE matters when your planned installation uses a compatible PoE switch, injector, or other power-sourcing equipment. You also need to confirm that the equipment can provide the power the camera requires.

PoE may matter less when a camera will use a separate DC or AC power source, or when your network equipment does not provide PoE. In those cases, the camera's listed PoE capability may not be useful unless you add compatible equipment.

What does PoE not tell you?

A PoE specification does not rate image quality, reliability, night vision, network performance, or overall product quality. It only indicates that PoE is listed as a power capability.

A PoE flag also does not, by itself, tell you which IEEE PoE standard is supported, how much power the camera draws, whether a switch or injector is included, or whether every installation condition will be compatible. Those details must be checked separately.

What should you check on a product page or spec sheet?

Check the following details:

  • Whether PoE is listed as supported, rather than assuming it from an Ethernet port.
  • The supported PoE standard, such as 802.3af, 802.3at, or 802.3bt, if stated.
  • The camera's required or maximum power draw.
  • Whether the camera also accepts DC or another power source.
  • Whether a PoE switch, injector, power supply, or other accessory is included.
  • The switch or injector's available power budget for the number of cameras you plan to connect.
  • Ethernet cable requirements and the stated network-distance limits.
  • Whether the camera's network protocols and connection method fit your recorder or network.
  • Any installation-specific requirements that are not stated on the product page.

If the listing only says “PoE: Yes,” the supported standard, power draw, included equipment, and installation limits stay unknown until you find them in the detailed specifications or from the manufacturer.
