PoE switch
What a PoE switch means
A PoE switch is a network switch that can carry both data and electrical power over Ethernet cable. With a compatible security camera, one cable can provide the camera’s network connection and its power connection.
For a SecurityCamFit shopper, this term usually matters when comparing wired IP camera systems. A PoE switch may help connect multiple cameras to a local network while avoiding a separate power adapter for each camera. It is different from a basic network switch that only handles data.
Why the term matters
PoE can affect how a camera system is installed and what other equipment is needed. The switch may connect cameras to a recorder, router, or wider network, depending on the product and system design. The camera must also support the relevant PoE method or power requirements.
A PoE label is a capability flag, not a quality rating. It does not by itself indicate better image quality, stronger network performance, greater reliability, or suitability for every camera.
What the label does not tell you
“PoE” alone does not identify:
- Which PoE standard or power class is supported
- How much power each port can provide
- The switch’s total power budget across all ports
- Whether every port supplies power
- Whether the switch is managed or unmanaged
- Whether it includes features such as isolation, long-distance modes, or network monitoring
- Whether the switch is compatible with a particular camera or recorder
Those details remain unknown unless they are stated in the product specifications. A product listing that only says “PoE” should not be treated as proof that every PoE power class is supported.
What to check on a product page
Look for the stated PoE standard, supported power classes, per-port output, and total PoE budget. Check how many ports provide PoE and whether the product has separate uplink ports or other network connections relevant to the intended system.
Also compare the switch’s listed compatibility with the camera and recorder. If the published product information does not identify these details, treat them as unknown rather than assuming compatibility from the PoE label alone.
