IP67
What IP67 means
IP67 is an ingress protection rating defined under the IP code system. For a security camera or other product enclosure:
- The first 6 means the enclosure is dust-tight under the applicable test.
- The second 7 means it is protected against temporary immersion in water under specified test conditions, commonly described as up to 1 metre for a limited period.
On SecurityCamFit, IP67 appears in product specifications and certification lists for published security products. The rating describes resistance to dust and a defined type of water exposure; it is not a general statement that a camera can operate in any wet environment.
Why it matters for a security camera
IP67 can be relevant when a camera is installed outdoors or in a location where rain, splashing, dust, or brief flooding is possible. It gives a buyer a standardized enclosure-protection reference when comparing products.
The rating still needs to be considered alongside the proposed installation. Cable entries, connectors, mounting points, covers, and installation practices can affect real-world protection. A product page may list IP67 for the camera or enclosure without fully describing every accessory or connection arrangement.
What IP67 does not tell you
IP67 is a capability rating, not a quality rating. It does not by itself confirm:
- Image resolution, low-light performance, viewing range, or recording quality
- Resistance to impact, vandalism, chemicals, salt air, or corrosion
- Protection against continuous water jets or high-pressure cleaning
- Suitability for permanent underwater use
- Operating temperature, condensation behavior, or long-term weather performance
- That every included cable, connector, accessory, or mounting method has the same rating
It also does not replace the product’s installation instructions. The exact test conditions and any limits stated by the manufacturer remain important.
What to check on a product page
When a product lists IP67, check:
- Whether the rating applies to the complete camera, a particular enclosure, or only part of the assembly.
- Whether the listing identifies the relevant test standard or provides additional installation conditions.
- How exposed connections and cable glands are protected after installation.
- Whether the product has separate information for impact protection, corrosion resistance, temperature, or other environmental concerns.
- Whether the camera’s intended location involves pressure washing, persistent immersion, salt exposure, or another condition that IP67 alone does not describe.
Nearby specifications may include IP66, which addresses a different water-exposure test, and IP69K, which refers to protection against a more demanding high-temperature, high-pressure water-jet test. These ratings should not be treated as interchangeable. Other labels such as IK10 and NEMA 4X describe different or overlapping aspects of enclosure protection and should be read according to their own definitions.
