IK10

IK10 is an IEC 62262 impact-protection rating for equipment enclosures, indicating resistance to an impact energy of 20 joules under the standard’s test conditions.

What IK10 means

IK10 is the highest numbered level in the standard IK impact-protection code defined by IEC 62262. It indicates that an enclosure has been tested against an impact energy of 20 joules under specified test conditions.

On a security camera, the rating generally concerns the camera enclosure and its resistance to mechanical impact. It can be relevant where equipment may be exposed to accidental knocks, deliberate interference, or other physical contact.

Why it matters on SecurityCamFit

Security cameras with an IK10 listing may be relevant for exposed installations where physical protection is a concern. The published products on SecurityCamFit include cameras identified simply as IK10, as well as some products listing IK10 alongside IP67, IP68, or NEMA 4X.

These labels describe different properties. IK10 addresses impact resistance; an IP rating addresses protection against dust and water; and NEMA 4X is a separate enclosure classification. One rating does not establish the others.

What IK10 does not tell you

IK10 is a capability and test-classification flag, not a general quality rating. It does not by itself tell you:

  • How well the camera withstands every type of vandalism or repeated impact
  • Whether the lens, mounting surface, cable, connector, or bracket has the same protection
  • Whether the camera is weatherproof
  • How the camera performs in low light, motion, or difficult viewing conditions
  • Whether the housing will remain undamaged under impacts outside the standard test conditions

Some product data also uses “IK10+”. That wording is not one of the standard numbered IK levels by itself, so the product page or manufacturer documentation should provide the test method and any additional claim before its meaning is assumed.

What to check on a product page

Look for the exact IK designation and, where available, the referenced standard or supporting datasheet. Check whether the rating applies to the complete camera assembly or only a specified enclosure component. Also review separate entries for IP67, IP68, NEMA 4X, and installation hardware rather than treating IK10 as a substitute for them.

Finally, confirm what remains unspecified. A product page that lists IK10 may not state the impact-test conditions, coverage of accessories, or details behind an “IK10+” label. Those omissions should remain unknown unless the documentation explains them.

IP67, IP68, NEMA 4X, and vandal-resistant are related terms, but they are not interchangeable with IK10.
