Use this security camera planning checklist to define coverage, image goals, power, networking, recording, privacy and installation requirements before you buy. It also highlights compatibility risks that can create problems during installation.

Start with the location and monitoring goal

A good security camera plan starts with what you need to see and where you need to see it—not with a camera’s resolution or feature list.

Walk the property during the day and after dark. Mark every area where an event could occur, then decide what the camera must accomplish:

  • Overview: Show that activity occurred and provide context.
  • Detection: Show that a person, vehicle or animal entered an area.
  • Recognition: Provide enough usable detail to help someone recognize a person or object.
  • Identification: Capture details that may help distinguish a specific person, vehicle or item.

These goals affect camera placement, field of view, lighting, mounting height, image quality and recording settings. A wide view may cover more ground but make subjects appear smaller. A tighter view may support identification but leave blind spots.

Location planning checklist

For each proposed camera location, record:

  • Area name, such as front door, driveway, side gate or stockroom
  • Indoor or outdoor environment
  • Primary monitoring goal: overview, detection, recognition or identification
  • Important activity zones
  • Likely subject distance from the camera
  • Daylight and nighttime lighting conditions
  • Potential glare, reflections or backlighting
  • Possible obstructions, including trees, signs, shelves and vehicles
  • Mounting surface and approximate mounting height
  • Cable route or Wi-Fi coverage
  • Available power source
  • Whether the camera may be exposed to rain, dust, condensation, heat or cold
  • Whether audio recording could create additional privacy or legal concerns

Do not assume that one camera can cover an entire property effectively. A single wide-angle view may show a person entering a yard without showing enough detail for identification at the gate.

Define overview versus identification coverage

Create a simple coverage map before choosing models. Divide each location into the areas that need context and the areas that need detail.

Overview areas

Overview coverage is useful for understanding:

  • Where a person came from
  • Which direction a vehicle traveled
  • Whether a gate, door or driveway was open
  • General activity in a yard, hallway or parking area
  • Movement between two more detailed camera views

For overview coverage, a broader field of view can be useful. However, avoid pointing a camera so widely that important subjects become too small in the image.

Identification areas

Identification coverage is more demanding. Plan for:

  • The likely distance between the subject and camera
  • The direction people approach from
  • Whether faces will be shaded, backlit or hidden by hats
  • Whether the camera is mounted too high or too far away
  • Whether vehicles enter at an angle or directly toward the camera
  • Whether the scene changes between daylight and nighttime

A camera’s advertised resolution alone does not guarantee identification. The lens, field of view, lighting, compression, motion, mounting position and subject distance all affect usable detail.

Practical rule of thumb: Use a narrower, more controlled view for important identification zones and a wider view for general awareness. Treat this as planning guidance, not a guaranteed performance standard.

Avoid common placement mistakes

  • Mounting the camera behind glass, which can create reflections and interfere with night illumination
  • Pointing directly at the sun or a bright light
  • Placing the camera where a person can easily reach, cover or damage it
  • Mounting too high for useful facial detail
  • Aiming a wide camera at a large empty area while missing the approach path
  • Assuming night vision can compensate for poor placement or extreme backlighting
  • Ignoring areas hidden by doors, rooflines, walls or landscaping
  • Covering a public or neighboring area unnecessarily

Choose indoor versus outdoor equipment

Indoor and outdoor locations have different environmental requirements.

Indoor cameras

For indoor locations, evaluate:

  • Room size and camera viewing angle
  • Ceiling or wall mounting options
  • Available outlets
  • Wi-Fi signal at the final mounting point
  • Whether household activity creates privacy concerns
  • Whether the camera should be disabled or repositioned when occupants are home
  • Whether audio is necessary

Do not install an indoor-only camera outdoors unless its documentation specifically supports that environment. Indoor equipment may not be designed for rain, condensation, dust or temperature changes.

Outdoor cameras

For outdoor locations, verify the manufacturer’s environmental specifications for the exact model. Check:

  • Weather exposure
  • Temperature range
  • Dust and water protection information, if provided
  • Condensation risk
  • Sun exposure
  • Wind and vibration
  • Snow, ice or sprinkler spray
  • Secure mounting
  • Cable protection
  • Access for maintenance

A weather-resistant camera still needs a sensible installation. Water can enter through poorly sealed cable connections, wall penetrations or unprotected power adapters.

Decide how each camera will receive power

Power planning is one of the most common causes of installation problems. Document the power method for every camera before purchase.

Power options

Common approaches include:

  • Standard electrical outlet: Simple where an outlet is close, but the adapter and cable may need protection.
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE): Carries network connectivity and power over a compatible Ethernet connection. It requires compatible PoE equipment and suitable cabling.
  • Wi-Fi camera with local power: Uses Wi-Fi for data but still needs a nearby outlet or other approved power source.
  • Battery power: Reduces cable installation but introduces charging, battery-life and placement considerations.
  • Solar-assisted power: May be useful in suitable locations, but performance depends on the equipment, sunlight, weather and installation conditions.

Do not treat “wireless” as “wire-free.” A Wi-Fi camera usually still needs power unless it is specifically designed for battery or another cable-free power system.

PoE compatibility checklist

Before selecting a PoE camera, verify:

  • The camera requires PoE and the network equipment supplies the required PoE standard
  • The switch, injector or recorder has enough available power budget
  • The Ethernet cable route is practical and protected
  • The recorder or network supports the camera’s connection method
  • The system can reach the camera’s network location
  • Any included or required adapters are appropriate for the installation

A PoE camera may connect to a network switch without automatically being compatible with every NVR or surveillance platform. Check the camera and recorder documentation for supported standards, discovery methods, recording features and configuration requirements.

Wi-Fi planning checklist

For a Wi-Fi camera, check the signal at the intended mounting location—not just beside the router.

Evaluate:

  • Distance and walls between the camera and access point
  • Construction materials that may weaken the signal
  • Interference from other networks or devices
  • Upload capacity if footage leaves the property
  • Whether the camera reconnects reliably after a power or network interruption, if documented
  • Whether the camera supports the required Wi-Fi band or network configuration
  • Whether the camera can be placed near a secure power source

Estimate: Wireless reliability is site-specific. A signal that works for a phone may not provide the same reliability for a permanently installed camera sending continuous or frequent video.

Plan the network before buying

Network requirements depend on the number of cameras, video settings, recording method and remote-access use.

List the following:

  • Number of cameras
  • Wired or Wi-Fi connection for each camera
  • Expected video bitrate, if published
  • Whether recording is continuous, scheduled or event-based
  • Whether cameras record locally, to an NVR, to a cloud service or to more than one destination
  • Whether remote viewing is required
  • Available wired network ports
  • Switch capacity and PoE budget
  • Router and Internet upload capacity
  • Network segmentation or guest-network restrictions
  • Cable lengths and routes

Estimate total network bandwidth

If camera bitrates are available, use:

Total camera bandwidth = Camera 1 bitrate + Camera 2 bitrate + ...

For example, if three cameras each use an estimated 4 Mbps stream:

3 × 4 Mbps = 12 Mbps theoretical camera traffic

This is an estimate, not a guarantee of actual network use. Overhead, secondary streams, motion settings, remote viewing and other network activity can change the result. Leave practical capacity above the calculated total rather than planning at the exact limit.

For storage or data-transfer estimates:

Megabytes per second = Megabits per second / 8

For example:

8 Mbps / 8 = 1 MB/s theoretical transfer rate

Choose recording: NVR, local storage or cloud

Decide how footage will be recorded before choosing cameras. Recording compatibility can be more important than camera features.

NVR recording

An NVR can centralize recording for compatible network cameras. Confirm:

  • Whether the camera and NVR support each other
  • Supported camera standards and connection methods
  • Maximum number of channels
  • Storage capacity and drive requirements
  • Continuous, scheduled and event recording options
  • Playback and export functions
  • Whether remote access requires an Internet connection
  • Whether camera features remain available when recording through the NVR
  • Whether the NVR supplies PoE or requires a separate switch

Do not assume that a camera will provide every advertised feature when connected to a third-party NVR. Compatibility may allow basic video recording while limiting audio, alerts, two-way talk, analytics or camera configuration.

Local camera storage

Some cameras support storage in the camera itself. Check the exact model documentation for:

  • Supported storage media
  • Maximum capacity
  • Recording modes
  • Overwrite behavior when storage is full
  • Whether footage remains accessible if the camera is stolen
  • Export and playback options
  • How storage failures are reported

Local storage can simplify small installations, but it may not provide the same central management or physical protection as an NVR.

Cloud recording

Cloud recording can support off-site access and may preserve footage if the camera or local recorder is damaged. Before choosing it, verify:

  • Required subscription or account
  • Retention period
  • Number of cameras supported
  • Upload requirements
  • Export options
  • What features require an active plan
  • What happens if the subscription ends
  • Account security and available multi-factor authentication
  • Data storage location and applicable privacy terms

Never assume that cloud recording is included, permanent or independent of Internet access. Confirm the current terms for the exact product.

Estimate storage requirements

If a camera’s average bitrate is known, estimate storage with:

Storage per day in GB ≈ Bitrate in Mbps × 10.8

Then:

Total storage ≈ Storage per day × Number of days × Number of cameras

Example estimate:

  • Average bitrate: 4 Mbps
  • Retention target: 7 days
  • Cameras: 4

4 Mbps × 10.8 = approximately 43.2 GB per camera per day

43.2 GB × 7 days × 4 cameras = approximately 1,209.6 GB

This is an estimate. Actual storage varies with codec, frame rate, image complexity, audio, motion activity, recording mode, overhead and the recorder’s formatting. If the bitrate is not published, do not treat a resolution-based storage guess as a verified capacity requirement.

Check night vision and lighting conditions

Night performance depends on the scene, not only on whether a camera lists “night vision.”

Inspect:

  • Existing porch, street or security lighting
  • Dark areas where a subject may stand
  • Bright lights behind or beside the subject
  • Reflective surfaces such as walls, windows, license plates and wet pavement
  • Whether the camera’s own illumination could affect nearby rooms or neighbors
  • Whether color at night is important or monochrome footage is acceptable
  • Whether moving subjects may blur in low light

At night, a bright background can reduce useful detail on a nearby subject. Add or reposition lighting where appropriate, but avoid creating glare or pointing lights toward public roads and neighboring properties.

Night-vision distance, low-light performance and image quality are model-specific. Verify those details from the manufacturer’s documentation and, when possible, assess the actual scene rather than relying on a general label.

Plan privacy and security controls

Camera planning should protect the property without collecting unnecessary footage.

Privacy checklist

  • Identify areas that should not be recorded.
  • Avoid aiming into bedrooms, bathrooms or private neighboring spaces.
  • Use privacy masking or physical repositioning where supported.
  • Decide whether audio is needed; audio laws can differ from video rules by location.
  • Check local requirements for notices or consent.
  • Limit access to household members, staff or other authorized users.
  • Use strong, unique account credentials.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication when available.
  • Keep camera, recorder, router and account software maintained according to the manufacturer’s guidance.
  • Review remote-access permissions and shared users.
  • Define how long footage should be retained.
  • Secure exported footage and delete it when no longer needed.
  • Protect exposed cables and reset or remove equipment before disposal.

Privacy requirements vary by jurisdiction and use case. For workplaces, rentals, shared housing or cameras that may capture public areas, consult applicable local rules and professional advice where necessary.

Prepare the installation

Before drilling or running cable, make a test plan.

Installation checklist

  • Confirm the mounting surface can support the equipment.
  • Check the planned viewing angle from the final mounting height.
  • Test Wi-Fi at the actual camera position, if applicable.
  • Verify the cable route and approximate length.
  • Identify where cables enter walls or outdoor enclosures.
  • Plan drip loops and weather protection where appropriate.
  • Keep power adapters and connections protected from water and unauthorized access.
  • Confirm ladders or maintenance access will be safe.
  • Label cables and camera locations.
  • Leave service access for replacing storage, resetting equipment or cleaning lenses.
  • Avoid mounting where seasonal foliage will block the view.
  • Check the view during both day and night.
  • Confirm the camera does not create unnecessary privacy exposure.

A temporary test mount or handheld check can reveal blind spots before permanent installation. This is especially useful for doors, driveways and narrow side passages where a small change in angle can determine whether a face or license plate is visible.

Final security camera selection checklist

Use this checklist for every camera:

Coverage

  • [ ] Camera location and purpose are documented.
  • [ ] The required goal is defined: overview, detection, recognition or identification.
  • [ ] Subject distance and approach direction are understood.
  • [ ] Field of view covers the important zone without making subjects too small.

Environment

  • [ ] Temperature, moisture, dust, sun and mounting conditions have been reviewed.
  • [ ] The mounting surface and height are suitable.
  • [ ] The lens will remain accessible for cleaning and maintenance.

Power and network

  • [ ] The power source is confirmed.
  • [ ] “Wireless” has not been mistaken for “wire-free.”
  • [ ] PoE requirements, switch capacity and cable routes are verified where applicable.
  • [ ] Wi-Fi has been tested at the final location where applicable.
  • [ ] Router, Internet and upload requirements are understood.
  • [ ] Network bandwidth has practical headroom.

Recording

  • [ ] The recording destination is selected: NVR, local storage, cloud or a combination.
  • [ ] Camera and NVR compatibility is confirmed.
  • [ ] Storage capacity matches the retention goal.
  • [ ] Recording mode is selected: continuous, scheduled, event-based or another supported option.
  • [ ] Footage export and playback have been checked.
  • [ ] Cloud subscription requirements and retention terms are understood.

Privacy and security

  • [ ] The camera avoids unnecessary views into private areas.
  • [ ] Audio requirements and legal considerations have been reviewed.
  • [ ] User accounts and remote access are secured.
  • [ ] Firmware and software maintenance responsibilities are understood.
  • [ ] Retention and deletion rules are documented.
  • [ ] Exported footage will be stored securely.

Buying decision

  • [ ] The exact model’s specifications have been verified.
  • [ ] Required accessories are included or identified.
  • [ ] The camera fits the existing network and recording equipment.
  • [ ] Installation labor, cable, storage and power costs have been considered.
  • [ ] The system can be expanded or maintained if needs change.
