What is RTSP?
RTSP stands for Real Time Streaming Protocol. It is a network control protocol used to request and manage live media streams, such as video from a security camera.
A camera with an RTSP specification may provide a stream that compatible recording software, network video recorders, or media players can access. The exact stream format and access method depend on the product.
Why does RTSP matter when buying or comparing?
RTSP can matter if you want to connect a camera to a compatible recorder, monitoring application, or other software rather than relying only on the camera maker’s app or service.
When comparing products, RTSP support may help identify cameras that can work with your planned setup. However, cameras that list RTSP may still differ in stream URL, authentication, transport options, codecs, audio support, and the number of available streams.
When does RTSP matter—and when does it not?
RTSP matters when your intended recorder or software specifically supports RTSP and you need access to a camera’s network stream. It is also relevant when choosing between cameras for a self-managed or mixed-vendor setup.
It may matter less if you plan to use only the camera’s included app, a specified cloud service, or a recording system that does not use RTSP. Confirm the requirements of your complete setup before treating RTSP as a deciding factor.
What does RTSP not tell you?
An RTSP entry is a capability flag, not a quality rating. It does not by itself tell you that the camera has better image quality, lower latency, stronger reliability, wider compatibility, or more secure access.
RTSP support also does not identify the available resolution, frame rate, codec, audio behavior, stream path, authentication method, encryption, or whether a particular recorder will accept the stream. Those details remain unknown unless the product documentation states them.
What should you check on a product page or spec sheet?
Check for:
- The exact RTSP stream URL format or instructions for obtaining it
- Supported video and audio codecs
- Available main, secondary, or additional streams
- Supported resolution and frame-rate options for each stream
- Whether authentication is required and which method is used
- Supported transport options, such as TCP or UDP, if listed
- Whether the stream is encrypted or otherwise protected
- Compatibility requirements for your intended NVR, VMS, player, or software
- Whether RTSP is available only on a local network or under particular operating modes
- Any stated limits on simultaneous connections
If these details are not published, RTSP support alone is not enough to confirm compatibility with your planned system.
