fixed lens

A fixed lens has a set focal length that cannot be optically adjusted. It provides a consistent viewing angle rather than allowing optical zoom or varifocal adjustment.

What “fixed lens” means

On a security camera, a fixed lens usually has one set focal length. Its optical viewing angle cannot be adjusted after manufacture, unlike a varifocal lens, which can be changed across a focal-length range.

This gives the camera a consistent perspective. It does not, by itself, identify the lens size, exact field of view, image quality, or suitability for a particular mounting position.

Why it matters when comparing cameras

A fixed lens matters when you need a predictable area of coverage. The camera’s view is established by its lens and sensor combination, so placement and the distance to the scene affect what appears in frame.

It may be a straightforward choice when the intended viewing area is already known. It matters less when you need to fine-tune the framing after installation; in that situation, a camera with a varifocal lens may offer more adjustment.

A fixed lens is not a quality rating. It does not mean the camera has a sharper image, wider coverage, better low-light performance, or longer useful range than another camera.

What the label does not tell you

“Fixed lens” does not state the camera’s exact focal length or field of view. It also does not establish the minimum focus distance, sensor characteristics, resolution, night performance, or whether any digital zoom feature is available.

If a product page lists only “fixed lens,” those details remain unknown unless they are provided separately. A fixed lens also should not automatically be read as “fixed focus”; those describe different characteristics.

What to check on a product page

Look for the stated focal length, horizontal or diagonal field of view, and any minimum focus-distance information. Check whether the page distinguishes optical zoom from digital zoom, if zoom is mentioned.

Also review the camera’s mounting position and other listed image specifications. The fixed-lens label tells you that the optical framing is not adjustable; it does not confirm that the listed view will cover a particular doorway, driveway, or room.

Nearby concepts include varifocal lens, focal length, field of view, optical zoom, and fixed focus.
