cloud storage

Cloud storage saves security-camera footage on remote servers so it can be accessed through an internet-connected app or account instead of only from the camera or recorder.

What cloud storage means

For a security camera, cloud storage means recorded video is sent over the internet to remote servers rather than being kept only on the camera, a memory card, or a local recorder. Depending on the product, footage may be viewed through an app or online account.

Cloud storage is a recording and access capability. It is separate from the camera’s image quality and from the network protocols it supports.

Why it matters

Cloud storage can make recorded footage available when the camera or local recorder is not physically accessible. It may also provide a way to review events remotely through the manufacturer’s software or service.

It matters most when you need off-site access to recordings or want footage stored away from the camera’s location. It matters less if your setup is intended to use only local recording, or if an internet connection is not consistently available.

What the label does not tell you

A cloud-storage label is a capability flag, not a quality rating. It does not by itself tell you:

  • How long recordings are retained
  • Whether storage covers motion events, continuous video, or both
  • Whether a subscription, account, or separate service is required
  • How much footage can be stored
  • Whether the camera can keep recording during an internet outage
  • What export, download, privacy, or access controls are available
  • Whether local storage is also supported

The observed SecurityCamFit product context lists supported network protocols on published products, including TCP/IP, P2P, HTTP, HTTPS, DHCP, DNS, DDNS, RTSP, SMTP, MULTICAST, NTP, UPNP™, and SN. Those protocol listings do not, on their own, confirm cloud recording or describe the terms of any cloud service. The available context does not establish which published products offer cloud storage.

What to check on a product page

Look for a clear statement that cloud recording or cloud storage is supported. Then check the stated retention period, recording type, service requirements, and any storage limits or fees. Also look for whether the product offers local storage as an alternative and whether an internet connection is required for recording or only for remote viewing.

Nearby concepts include recording, local storage, and remote access. These describe related parts of a camera system but should not be treated as interchangeable with cloud storage.
